U.C. Marketing Faculty Member Named Academy of Marketing Science Outstanding Marketing Teacher

Dr. Andrea Dixon Wins International Teaching Award

July 17, 2008 – The Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) announced that Andrea Dixon, Executive Director of the MS-Marketing Program and Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Cincinnati, is AMS' Outstanding Marketing Teacher for 2008. Dixon traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia to receive the award. She also shared her teaching philosophy and pedagogies with a group of international teacher scholars at the Annual AMS Meeting.

Dr. Dixon won UC's prestigious College-wide EXCEL (EXcellence in Classroom Education and Learning) award for graduate instruction in 2003. This year, she was selected as the Ronald J. Dornoff Teaching Fellow, a title she will hold for two years. While affiliated with Indiana University, Andrea won a MBA Distinguised Professor designation (1995), a Irwin Publishing National Teaching Award (1994), a University-wide award (1993), and an Undergraduate Teaching Award (1992).

Since joining UC in 1998, Dr. Dixon has taught marketing courses at the undergraduate, MBA/MS, and Ph.D. levels. She helped to pioneer the College of Business' distance learning format, and trained other faculty on best-practice techniques and tips for enhancing student learning in that format.

Dixon's teaching philosophy centers on creating a culture focused on high performance, experiential learning, continuous improvement, and professionalism. At the University of Cincinnati, Department Heads periodically ask faculty colleagues to assess teaching performance of faculty in their Department. A Management professor writes: "What students heard in lectures and from guest speakers and read in books and cases, became what they had to try to do with a very real organization and with people whose jobs could be directly affected by the team's effectiveness. I can think of no better mechanism for both high-level learning and assessment of learning."

Dr. Dixon's teaching extends well beyond the University of Cincinnati. She teaches in Duke University's Executive Education program offering seminars around the world, and she is regularly asked to lecture at other universities. She is an engaging speaker who has been invited to share her knowledge with business and professional organizations, and community groups.
